Getting started

Connecting Discord

The official bot, your own bot, and which channel gets what.

Evalyn can post to Discord, run slash commands and sync roles. There are two ways to connect, and you only need one.

Option A: the official Evalyn bot

The simplest path. One bot, already hosted, no token to create or keep secret.

  1. Settings → Discord → Server / Guild — set your server id first. The bot works out which workspace a server belongs to from this, so linking without it does nothing.
  2. Official Evalyn Bot → Link this workspace.
  3. Add to server and authorise it.

It registers only the commands for features you have switched on, and removes them when you switch a feature off.

If it says "Not connected"

The panel shows the reason underneath. The most common one is a privileged intent: the bot needs Server Members Intent enabled for the application in the Discord developer portal, and Discord refuses the connection outright without it.

Option B: your own bot

Choose this if you want your group's own name and avatar on the messages.

Settings → Discord → Discord Bot, paste a bot token, set the server id. If both are configured, your own bot takes precedence over the official one.

Which channel gets what

This trips people up, so read this part carefully. There are several channel settings and they are not alternatives to each other:

SettingReceives
Notification ChannelGeneral events — forms, logbook entries, bans, announcements
Activity Feed ChannelThe same general events, plus shift start and end
Welcome ChannelNew member welcomes only
Session board channelsPer session type, set in Settings → Features → Sessions

The Notification Channel and the Activity Feed Channel both receive general events. If you set both, events appear in both. That is the feature — one for staff to watch, one as a running log — but it surprises people who expected changing one to move things.

If you want events in one place only, clear the other setting. Setting both to the same channel is fine and sends once, not twice.

Linking personal accounts

Individual people link their own Discord account from their account settings. This is what makes direct messages and role syncing possible for them — without it, Evalyn has no way to reach them, and features that DM will say so rather than failing quietly.

Finding ids

Turn on Settings → Advanced → Developer Mode in Discord, then right-click any server, channel or role and Copy ID. Evalyn only accepts real ids, not names.
